چکیده

Leishmaniasis is widely ignored in discussions on the priorities of tropical diseases, and the alreadyexisting drugs present high toxicity or teratogenicity, as well as reduced efficacy due to the emergence of resistant strains. Marine natural products have received increasing attention over the last few decades because of the isolation of metabolites found in many products, with structural pattern not available in terrestrial organisms. Several molecules of marine origin have been investigated in respect of their effects on different species of parasites that cause leishmaniasis. In this study, we review the pharmacological information obtained from the in vitro and in vivo assays on such metabolites.

Marine Algae as Source of Novel Antileishmanial Drugs: A Review

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne neglected tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites of the Leishmania genus and transmitted by the female Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia sand flies. The currently prescribed therapies still rely on pentavalent antimonials, pentamidine, paromomycin, liposomal amphotericin B, and miltefosine. However, their low efficacy, long-course treatment regimen, high toxicity...

Plant-derived compounds in treatment of leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is a neglected public health problem caused by the protozoan species belonging to the genus Leishmania affecting mostly the poor populations of developing countries. The causative organism is transmitted by female sandflies. Cutaneous, mucocutaneous, and visceral clinical manifestations are the most frequent forms of leishmaniasis. Chemotherapy still relies on the use of pentavale...

Effective materials of medicinal plants for leishmania treatment in vivo environment

Background: Treatment of leishmaniasis is a challenge due to problems such as high price and dose of the drug, drug resistance and side effects. Objective: The study aims to introduce plants compounds, which their antileishmanial effects were approved in vivo conditions. Methods: This study as a review article was performed by searching the keywords of “medicinal plants with in vivo antileishma...

Cytotoxic Activity of Holothuria leucospilota Extract against Leishmania infantum In Vitro

Leishmaniasis is a tropical parasitic infection. The resistance and toxicity issues are the major complications and remain significant consequences related to the treatment of leishmaniasis with the recent and classical drugs. Thus there is an immediate requirement to develop new compounds for the treatment of this protozoan disease. Sea cucumbers or holothurians are potentially presented as th...

Expression of green fluorescent protein as a marker for effects of antileishmanial compounds in vitro.

Transgenic Leishmania infantum promastigotes, which constitutively express green fluorescent protein (GFP) in their cytoplasm, were used to monitor the effects of antileishmanial compounds in real time. The GFP-based assay provided a reliable measure of drug-induced inhibitory effects on protein expression, resulting in a dynamic picture of the responses of leishmanial promastigotes to the comp...
